⛴️ San Juan Island — 3-Day Ferry Getaway

Three unhurried days on San Juan Island — the Anacortes ferry via Deception Pass, Friday Harbor, Lime Kiln whale-watching and the island's history — the way the San Juans are meant to be done: one island, no rush.

⛴️ San Juan Island — 3-Day Ferry Getaway

⛴️ Recommended Plan: 3 Days / 2 Nights

The San Juan Islands are not a practical single-day trip on the normal Anacortes ferry — stay at least one night and give one island your full attention rather than rushing several. This itinerary settles into San Juan Island, the easiest first visit and the widest mix of things to do: Friday Harbor, Lime Kiln Point, whale-watching, kayaking and the island's history.

ItemRecommendation
⛴️ FerryWashington State Ferries, Anacortes → Friday Harbor
🚗 VehicleReserve both the outbound and return sailings for summer travel
🎟️ ReservationsA ticket and a vehicle reservation are separate — a ticket alone does not guarantee vehicle space
🚶 Walk-onWalk-ons and cyclists don't normally need reservations; ideal if you're basing in Friday Harbor
🛏️ StayFriday Harbor (most walkable, best services)

⛴️ Not every sailing stops at every island, and schedules change by season — recheck the current Anacortes–San Juan Islands schedule close to departure.

Day 1

⛴️ Day 1 — Anacortes Ferry → San Juan Island

ItemRecommendation
🚘 DrivingDeception Pass is ~15 min south of the Anacortes ferry terminal
⛴️ FerryAnacortes → Friday Harbor (~1 hour crossing)
⏰ Arrive30–60 min before your sailing; earlier without a reservation
🛏️ StayFriday Harbor

Break up the drive north with a stop at Deception Pass, then let the ferry do the rest — the Salish Sea crossing is half the experience.

🌉 Stretch your legs at the dramatic Deception Pass Bridge and walk down to Rosario Beach — a scenic detour about 15 minutes south of the Anacortes terminal before you board.

⛴️ Sail from Anacortes to Friday Harbor, then settle in and explore the island's most walkable town — the waterfront, shops and restaurants are all steps from the ferry dock.

Day 2

🐋 Day 2 — West Side: Lime Kiln, Whales & Kayaking

ItemRecommendation
🚗 Getting aroundA vehicle, rental, bike or tour pickup — public transit is limited and seasonal
🐋 WhalesBook boat tours or kayaking ahead in summer
⏰ TipReserve tours with margin around ferry and meal times

San Juan Island's west side is the marquee day — the best land-based whale-watching in the state, plus the option to get out on the water.

  • 🦭 Lime Kiln Point State Park - half day
The lighthouse and rocky shoreline make it one of the best land-based whale-watching spots anywhere. Bring binoculars; sightings depend on season and prey.
  • 🔵 Optional whale-watching boat tour or a guided sea-kayaking trip. Book ahead in summer, and choose a guided kayak trip unless you know the Salish Sea's cold water and currents.
  • 🔵 Optional — the scenic west-side drive and continue north to Roche Harbor for the historic resort, marina and gardens.

Day 3

🏛️ Day 3 — History & Return Ferry

ItemRecommendation
⛴️ FerryReserve the return sailing; recheck alerts the morning of travel
⏰ MarginLeave buffer before your sailing — delays and vessel swaps happen
✈️ Don'tBook a flight for the same day as the return ferry

If time allows before the boat, visit San Juan Island National Historical Park — walk the windswept prairie and beach at American Camp, or the tidy lawns and gardens of English Camp, remnants of the 1859 'Pig War' standoff. Then make your way back to the ferry with margin to spare for the crossing home.

🗓️ Best Time to Travel

May–September for longer days, drier weather, the fullest ferry schedule, and active whale-watching and kayaking tours.

🐋 Wildlife

Orcas, humpbacks, minke whales, porpoises, seals and bald eagles all frequent these waters — but sightings are never guaranteed. Use a reputable operator, keep the federal and state distance from whales, and bring binoculars for land-based viewing at Lime Kiln Point.

🛶 On the Water

Guided sea-kayaking is the safe default: the Salish Sea brings cold water, strong currents, wind and fog. Don't treat protected-looking water as automatically easy.

⚠️ Keep It Flexible

Reserve lodging, rental vehicles and tours early, check ferry alerts the morning of travel, and leave margin before check-in, tours or dinner. Don't schedule a flight right after the return ferry.
