🌊 About the San Juan Islands

The San Juan Islands are an island group between mainland Washington and Vancouver Island, known for rocky shorelines, evergreen forests, quiet harbors, farms, kayaking, hiking, and marine wildlife.

The four main islands served by Washington State Ferries are:

  • San Juan Island — Friday Harbor, Lime Kiln Point, history, whale watching, and the widest range of visitor services
  • Orcas Island — Moran State Park, Mount Constitution, lakes, forests, and a more outdoors-focused visit
  • Lopez Island — flatter roads, cycling, farms, beaches, and a quieter atmosphere
  • Shaw Island — rural and lightly developed, with very limited visitor services

This is not a practical single-day side trip from Seattle unless you use a direct seasonal passenger service or flight. For the normal Anacortes ferry route, stay at least one night and avoid trying to cover multiple islands too quickly.

🏝️ Which Island to Choose

San Juan Island — Best First Visit

Choose San Juan Island for the easiest first trip and the broadest mix of activities.

Highlights include:

  • Friday Harbor
  • Lime Kiln Point State Park
  • San Juan Island National Historical Park
  • Whale-watching tours
  • The Whale Museum
  • Scenic drives and coastal viewpoints

Friday Harbor has the most walkable ferry-arrival area and the strongest concentration of restaurants, lodging, rentals, and tours.

Orcas Island — Best for Hiking and Scenery

Choose Orcas Island for forests, lakes, mountain views, and a slower outdoor-focused visit.

Highlights include:

  • Moran State Park
  • Mount Constitution
  • Cascade Lake
  • Mountain Lake
  • Eastsound
  • Scenic drives and short hikes

A vehicle is highly useful because the ferry terminal, Eastsound, Moran State Park, and other attractions are spread across the island.

Lopez Island — Best for Cycling and Quiet Roads

Choose Lopez Island for a relaxed rural atmosphere, flatter terrain, cycling, beaches, and farm landscapes.

Visitor services are more limited than on San Juan Island or Orcas Island, so reserve lodging and transportation early.

⛴️ Getting There

The most common route is the Washington State Ferries sailing from Anacortes to Lopez, Shaw, Orcas, or Friday Harbor on San Juan Island.

🌐 Official ferry information: Washington State Ferries

Important points:

  • Vehicle reservations are strongly recommended on the Anacortes–San Juan Islands route
  • A ferry ticket and a vehicle reservation are separate
  • A ticket alone does not guarantee vehicle space
  • Walk-on passengers and cyclists do not normally need reservations
  • Not every sailing stops at every island
  • Ferry schedules change by season
  • Delays and vessel substitutions are possible

For summer 2026 travel, Washington State Ferries specifically recommends reservations for vehicles on the Anacortes–San Juan Islands route.

🚗 Vehicle or Walk-On

Bringing a Vehicle

A vehicle is the better choice for:

  • Orcas Island
  • Scenic driving on San Juan Island
  • Families carrying substantial equipment
  • Remote lodging
  • Hiking, kayaking, or multiple park stops

Reserve both the outbound and return vehicle sailings when reservations are offered.

Arrive within the check-in window shown by Washington State Ferries. Arriving late can cause the reservation to be forfeited.

Walking On

Walking on is simpler and avoids vehicle-reservation pressure.

It works best when:

  • Staying in Friday Harbor
  • Booking tours that depart near the ferry terminal
  • Using a rental car, taxi, shuttle, bicycle, or moped
  • Staying at lodging that provides transportation

Walk-on travel is less convenient on Orcas Island unless transportation is arranged in advance.

🔄 Island Hopping

Inter-island ferries connect the ferry-served islands, but island hopping adds schedule risk and waiting time.

Do not plan a rushed itinerary that depends on several perfectly timed ferry connections.

A better approach is:

  • 2–3 days: Choose one island
  • 4–5 days: Combine San Juan Island and Orcas Island
  • 6+ days: Add Lopez Island if the ferry schedule supports it

Inter-island vehicle space can be limited. Recheck the current schedule rather than relying on an old itinerary.

🐋 Wildlife Viewing

The San Juan Islands are known for orcas, humpback whales, minke whales, porpoises, seals, sea lions, bald eagles, and seabirds.

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

For responsible viewing:

  • Use a reputable tour operator
  • Follow federal and state vessel-distance rules
  • Never pursue or crowd whales
  • Avoid approaching resting seals
  • Keep noise low around wildlife
  • Do not fly drones near protected wildlife
  • Bring binoculars for land-based viewing

Lime Kiln Point State Park on San Juan Island is one of the best-known land-based whale-viewing locations, but sightings still depend on season, prey, and animal movement.

🛶 Kayaking

Guided sea-kayaking tours are available from San Juan Island, Orcas Island, and Lopez Island.

A guided trip is the safer default for visitors unfamiliar with the Salish Sea.

Conditions can include:

  • Cold water
  • Strong currents
  • Tidal exchanges
  • Wind
  • Fog
  • Boat traffic
  • Limited landing areas

Do not treat protected-looking water as automatically easy. Cold-water immersion can become life-threatening quickly.

🚗 Transportation on the Islands

Public transportation is limited and seasonal.

Depending on the island, options may include:

  • Rental cars
  • Taxis
  • Seasonal shuttles
  • Bicycles and e-bikes
  • Mopeds
  • Hotel transportation
  • Tour-company pickup

Reserve transportation before arrival, especially during summer weekends.

Do not assume rideshare availability will match a major city.

🏨 Lodging and Reservations

Lodging can sell out well ahead of summer weekends.

Reserve early for:

  • Hotels and inns
  • Vacation rentals
  • Campgrounds
  • Ferry vehicle space
  • Rental vehicles
  • Whale-watching tours
  • Kayaking tours
  • Popular restaurants

Avoid booking a ferry arrival that leaves no margin before hotel check-in, a tour departure, or dinner reservation.

🌦️ Weather and Packing

Island weather is often cooler and windier than Seattle.

Bring:

  • A waterproof layer
  • Warm layers
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sun protection
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Binoculars
  • Motion-sickness medication if needed
  • Offline maps
  • Portable battery
  • Flexible plans

Morning fog, wind, ferry delays, and marine conditions can affect transportation and tours.

⚠️ Before You Go

  • Check ferry alerts on the day of travel
  • Reserve vehicle space in both directions
  • Confirm which island each sailing serves
  • Arrive before the reservation cutoff
  • Fill the gas tank before remote driving
  • Do not depend on late-night transportation
  • Download maps and confirmations offline
  • Keep the itinerary flexible
  • Avoid scheduling a flight immediately after the return ferry
  • Respect private property and local communities
