Deception Pass is a dramatic strait between Whidbey and Fidalgo islands, spanned by an iconic 1935 bridge that arcs high above churning tidal water. It anchors Deception Pass State Park, the most-visited state park in Washington.

Below the bridge, powerful currents surge through the narrow channel with the tides. The park wraps both shorelines with beaches, forested headlands, and quiet coves, making it an easy and scenic final stop on a Washington loop.

🚗 Access and Parking

Deception Pass State Park straddles SR 20 near the bridge, with parking areas at West Beach, Bowman Bay, and Rosario Beach. Lots fill on sunny weekends. Allow buffer time for I-5 congestion when continuing toward Seattle.

🎟️ Fees and Reservations

Deception Pass is a Washington State Park; a Discover Pass is required for vehicle parking (daily or annual). No reservation is needed for day use.

⚠️ Safety

  • Stay well back from the channel — currents are strong and cold
  • Watch footing on the bridge walkways and bluff trails
  • Keep back from unstable cliff edges at the headlands
  • Bring a light layer; the water keeps things cool
