🏞️ About Crater Lake

Crater Lake National Park is home to the deepest lake in the United States, reaching approximately 1,943 feet (592 meters).

The lake formed about 7,700 years ago after the collapse of Mount Mazama during a massive volcanic eruption. Fed almost entirely by rain and snow, Crater Lake is known for its exceptionally clear water, intense blue color, steep volcanic cliffs, and iconic Wizard Island.

πŸ“… Best Months to Visit

β˜€οΈ July–September β€” Best Overall

This is generally the best time to experience Crater Lake because the park’s roads, hiking trails, overlooks, and seasonal facilities are most likely to be open.

  • July: Snow may remain on some trails, but most areas begin opening
  • August: Warmest weather and best overall access
  • September: Cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and generally good road access

🌨️ Late June β€” Possible but Unpredictable

May and June are transition months at Crater Lake. Lingering snow may close portions of Rim Drive, hiking trails, overlooks, and facilities.

Road and trail opening dates vary significantly each year.

πŸ‚ Early October β€” Shoulder Season

Early October can offer fewer visitors and beautiful fall conditions, but winter weather may arrive quickly.

Seasonal lodging, campgrounds, dining, and visitor facilities may already be closed or operating on reduced schedules.

❄️ November–May β€” Winter Experience

Crater Lake National Park is open year-round, but most roads, trails, lodging, and visitor services close seasonally because of heavy snowfall.

Winter activities include:

  • Snowshoeing
  • Cross-country skiing
  • Winter photography
  • Limited lake viewing
  • Winter backcountry camping

⚠️ Important 2026–2028 Closure

The Cleetwood Cove Trail, the only public trail providing legal access to the lakeshore, is closed for a major rehabilitation project.

The National Park Service states that there will be no public boat tours during the summers of 2026, 2027, and 2028.

During the closure:

  • 🚫 No public access to the lakeshore
  • 🚫 No swimming or wading access
  • 🚫 No public boat tours
  • 🚫 No Wizard Island boat trips

Other parts of the park remain open, but construction may affect portions of Rim Drive, trailheads, overlooks, and parking areas.
