This itinerary gives you enough time for Monterey, Big Sur, the Central Coast, Solvang, Santa Barbara, and Malibu without turning every day into an exhausting drive.

Visit the Golden Gate viewpoints early — before 9 a.m. on weekends, when parking fills up. The city stays cold, windy and foggy even in summer, so bring a jacket.
⚠️ Don't keep a rental car overnight in the city — parking is costly and break-ins are common. Pick the car up the morning you leave.

Break the drive at Half Moon Bay (45–60 min) and Pigeon Point Lighthouse (20 min), then pick one Santa Cruz stop — the Beach Boardwalk, West Cliff Drive, or the Henry Cowell redwoods. The 17-Mile Drive is best in late-afternoon light; skip it in heavy fog.

Monterey — more hotels and restaurants, easier logistics, better for families. Carmel — more romantic, walkable and quieter. Stay in Carmel for the experience, Monterey for convenience.

This is the big driving day — do not start late. Work south through Point Lobos, Bixby Creek Bridge (legal turnouts only), Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park or Pfeiffer Beach, McWay Falls, and the Piedras Blancas elephant-seal rookery.
🚧 Highway 1 is prone to landslides and storm closures. Check Caltrans the morning you leave Monterey. Cell coverage and fuel are scarce — download offline maps and arrive before sunset.

Treat Solvang as a 2–3 hour half-day stop — Danish bakeries, Copenhagen Drive, and Old Mission Santa Inés — rather than an overnight. It's inland and hot in summer, so go in the morning. An optional detour through Los Olivos and the Santa Ynez Valley adds 2–4 hours of wine country.

Choose two or three Malibu stops — Point Dume, Zuma Beach, El Matador, or the Malibu Pier — then roll through Santa Monica into LA.
🚦 Avoid entering central Los Angeles during the weekday afternoon commute. The last 30–40 miles can take longer than the entire Santa Barbara-to-Ventura stretch.

🥇 Best overall — September to October: clearer coastal views, mild temperatures, lower storm risk, and fewer crowds after Labor Day. 🌸 Second best — April to May: greener hills and spring flowers, with some residual rain and wind. ☀️ Summer brings long daylight but heavy fog, higher prices and tight parking. 🌧️ Winter is for flexibility over certainty — rain and Highway 1 closures are real risks.
🧳 Booking & Logistics
- 🚗 Pick the rental car up as you leave San Francisco and return it after arriving in LA — a normal sedan is plenty.
- ⛽ Fill the tank before Big Sur; fuel is scarce and expensive along the coast.
- 🏨 Reserve Carmel, Cambria and Santa Barbara early.
- 🎟️ Book Hearst Castle and the Monterey Bay Aquarium ahead during peak periods.
- 🚧 Check Caltrans for Highway 1 closures before you leave and again before Big Sur.
