🏞️ About Wailua River
Wailua River is a lush, historically significant river flowing from Mount Waiʻaleʻale toward Kauaʻi’s eastern coast.
The approximately 20-mile river passes through an area once associated with several important Hawaiian heiau, or temples. Visitors can experience it by kayak, stand-up paddleboard, outrigger canoe, boat tour, or nearby scenic viewpoints.
✨ Why Visit
Wailua River is especially known for:
- 🛶 Kayaking through tropical river scenery
- 🥾 The hike toward Uluwehi Falls, commonly called Secret Falls
- 🌿 Dense rainforest and mountain views
- 🏛️ Important Hawaiian cultural sites
- 💧 Nearby ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls
- 🚤 Boat trips to Fern Grotto
- 📸 Easy scenic overlooks for visitors not kayaking
🌊 Option A — Kayak and Hike to Uluwehi Falls
This half-day experience combines approximately:
- 🛶 4–5 miles of paddling
- 🥾 About 2 miles of hiking
- ⏱️ 4–5 hours total
- 🟡 Difficulty: Moderate
The river section is generally calm, but boat wakes, wind, current, and changing water levels can affect the paddle. The hiking portion may be muddy, slippery, uneven, and require stream crossings.
Use a reputable outfitter operating with the required commercial permissions. Hawaiʻi State Parks requires commercial rental kayaks used within Wailua River State Park to carry registered vessel decals under its Rental Vessel Special Use Permit program.
A guided tour is the safer choice for visitors unfamiliar with the route or local river conditions.
👀 Option B — Viewpoints and Cultural Stops
Visitors who do not want to kayak can spend about an hour or more exploring:
- 🌊 The Wailua River overlook
- 💧 ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls
- 🏛️ Nearby Wailua cultural and historic sites
- 🌴 Short East Side coastal stops
- 🚤 Fern Grotto boat tours
This option requires little walking and works well when river or weather conditions make kayaking unsuitable.
🎟️ Fees and Reservations
A normal scenic visit does not usually require a timed-entry reservation.
Current Wailua River State Park fees include:
- Hawaiʻi residents: Free with valid Hawaiʻi ID
- Non-resident entry: $5 per person
- Children age 3 and under: Free
- Non-resident parking: $10 per vehicle

⚠️ River and Weather Safety
Flash flooding, strong current, high water, wind, and heavy rain can cancel or materially change the kayak-and-hike route.
Visitors should:
- Check weather and flash-flood alerts
- Follow outfitter instructions
- Wear a life jacket
- Protect electronics in a dry bag
- Expect mud and slippery terrain
- Never enter flooded streams
- Turn back if water levels rise
- Avoid relying only on cell service
The park is currently open daily from 7:00 AM to 7:45 PM, but hours and access can change.
