πŸŒ„ About Sunrise

Sunrise is the highest point you can reach by car in Mount Rainier National Park, sitting around 6,400 feet on the mountain's northeast side. It opens later in the season than Paradise and holds snow longer.

The area is a world of subalpine ridges, wildflower meadows, and open views straight across to Rainier and the Emmons Glacier β€” the largest glacier in the contiguous United States. A network of ridge trails fans out from the parking area, including the route to the historic Mount Fremont fire lookout.

πŸ“… Best Time to Visit

β˜€οΈ July–September β€” The Only Full-Access Window

Sunrise Road opens later than the rest of the park (typically early summer) and closes for the season in fall. Midsummer brings peak wildflowers and snow-free ridges.

❄️ Off-Season β€” Closed

Sunrise Road is closed by snow outside the summer window. Confirm it is open before making the drive.

πŸš— Access and Parking

Sunrise is reached via a long, winding mountain road from the White River Entrance. Parking fills on clear summer days β€” arrive early. The drive up from the southwest side of the park takes several hours, so plan the route.

🎟️ Fees and Reservations

A valid Mount Rainier / Interagency entrance pass is required. No timed-entry reservation is required in 2026, but parking controls remain.

⚠️ Alpine Safety

  • Weather changes fast at 6,400 feet β€” carry warm layers
  • Snow can linger on higher trails into summer
  • Watch for afternoon storms on exposed ridges
  • Carry water, sun protection, and offline maps
