🏝️ About Spouting Horn

Spouting Horn is one of Kauaʻi’s best-known natural attractions.

Ocean waves enter a natural lava tube beneath the rocky shoreline and force water and compressed air through an opening in the rock. The result is a powerful spray that can rise as high as 50 feet, often accompanied by a loud hissing or roaring sound.

The viewpoint also offers wide views of Kauaʻi’s rugged south coast and is especially beautiful near sunset.

✨ Why Visit

Spouting Horn is especially known for:

  • 🌊 Dramatic ocean spray rising through lava rock
  • 🪨 Kauaʻi’s volcanic coastline
  • 🌅 Beautiful sunset views
  • 📸 Easy coastal photography
  • 🐋 Possible humpback whale sightings from December through May
  • 🚗 Convenient access and nearby parking

📅 Best Time to Visit

☀️ Year-Round

Spouting Horn can be visited during any season.

  • Morning: Cooler temperatures and fewer visitors
  • Afternoon: Bright ocean colors
  • Sunset: Warm light and dramatic coastal views
  • Higher surf: Usually produces stronger and taller sprays

Ocean conditions vary, so the height and frequency of the spray are never guaranteed.

🚗 Access

Spouting Horn Park is located west of Poʻipū near Lāwaʻi Road.

The lookout is easy to reach from the parking area and does not require a hike. The area typically includes restrooms, viewpoints, and local vendor stalls.

⚠️ Safety

High surf and rough ocean conditions can be dangerous.

Visitors should:

  • Stay behind all safety barriers
  • Follow warning signs
  • Never climb onto the blowhole or wet lava rocks
  • Keep children close
  • Avoid the shoreline during dangerous surf conditions

Official Hawaiʻi tourism guidance specifically recommends remaining behind safe-distance barriers at Spouting Horn.
