🌲 About the Trail

The Sol Duc Falls trail is a short, mostly gentle walk through mossy old-growth forest to one of Olympic National Park's most photographed waterfalls.

At the end of the trail, the Sol Duc River splits and drops in several channels into a narrow rock canyon, crossed by a footbridge that gives the classic head-on view. The trail also connects to the Lover's Lane loop and the wider High Divide backcountry network for those continuing farther.

✨ Why Hike It

The trail is especially known for:

  • 🌊 The dramatic multi-channel waterfall
  • 🌲 Old-growth forest and heavy moss
  • πŸŒ‰ A footbridge with a direct view of the falls
  • πŸ“Έ Long-exposure waterfall photography
  • πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§ A short, family-friendly distance
  • πŸ”— Connections to longer Sol Duc backcountry routes

πŸ“… Best Time to Hike

πŸ’§ May–June β€” Peak Flow

Spring snowmelt makes the falls thunder, though the trail can be wet and the access road opens seasonally.

β˜€οΈ July–September β€” Easiest Access

Summer brings dry trail conditions, reliable road access, and warm forest walking.

❄️ Sol Duc Hot Springs Road is seasonal and can close in the off-season. Confirm it is open before driving out.

πŸš— Access and Parking

The trailhead is at the very end of Sol Duc Hot Springs Road, past the resort. The lot fills midday in summer; arrive early or later in the afternoon.

🎟️ Permit and Fee

No hiking permit is required for the day hike to the falls. A valid Olympic National Park entrance pass is required. Overnight trips into the backcountry beyond the falls require a wilderness permit.

πŸ₯Ύ Trail Conditions

The route is well maintained but includes:

  • Packed dirt and some roots
  • Occasional mud after rain
  • Slippery boards and rock near the falls and bridge

Wear shoes with grip and keep back from wet, unfenced edges at the viewpoint.

⚠️ Safety

  • Rocks near the falls are slick and the drop is unguarded
  • Keep children close on the footbridge
  • Carry a rain layer β€” the valley is wet
  • Check the seasonal road status before driving out
