Old Kōloa Town is a small historic district on Kauaʻi’s South Shore, a short drive from Poʻipū.
The town grew around Hawaiʻi’s first successful large-scale sugar plantation, established in 1835. Historic plantation-era buildings now contain local shops, galleries, cafés, restaurants, and small businesses.
Old Kōloa Town is compact and easy to explore on foot, making it a convenient stop between Līhuʻe, Poʻipū, and other South Shore destinations.

📜 History
Kōloa played a major role in the development of Hawaiʻi’s sugar industry.
The nearby Old Sugar Mill of Kōloa is recognized by the National Park Service as the site of Hawaiʻi’s first successful large-scale sugar-manufacturing enterprise.
The town’s history is also part of the Kōloa Heritage Trail, a self-guided route connecting 14 important cultural, historical, and geological sites across Kōloa and Poʻipū.

A short distance from the town center, the old sugar mill site marks the beginning of Kauaʻi’s plantation era.

The Kōloa Heritage Trail is a 10-mile self-guided route with interpretive signs explaining the area’s Native Hawaiian, plantation, cultural, and geological history.
You do not need to complete the entire route; several stops can easily be combined with a visit to Old Kōloa Town.
🌳 Tree Tunnel
The scenic entrance to Kōloa follows Maluhia Road through a corridor of mature eucalyptus trees commonly called the Tree Tunnel.

Late spring generally offers warm weather, fewer visitors than peak winter and summer, and comfortable conditions for walking around town.

Brief tropical showers are possible throughout the year.

Old Kōloa Town is located at approximately 5408 Kōloa Road, near the intersection with Maluhia Road.
According to the official visitor directions, the town is roughly:
- 15–25 minutes from Līhuʻe Airport, depending on traffic
- 5–10 minutes from Poʻipū
- About 30 minutes from Kapaʻa
- More than one hour from much of the North Shore
Parking is available around the town center, but spaces can fill during lunch, weekends, and special events.
