πŸ”οΈ About Hurricane Ridge

Hurricane Ridge is the most accessible alpine area in Olympic National Park, reached by a paved mountain road climbing roughly 17 miles south from Port Angeles.

From the ridge, the view opens across the interior peaks of the Olympic Mountains to the south and north across the Strait of Juan de Fuca toward Vancouver Island. Subalpine meadows, wildflowers, and grazing deer surround the visitor area in summer, and the ridge becomes a snow-play and ski area in winter.

✨ Why Visit

Hurricane Ridge is especially known for:

  • πŸ”οΈ Panoramic views of the Olympic Mountains
  • 🌊 Sightlines across the Strait of Juan de Fuca
  • 🌸 Summer wildflower meadows
  • 🦌 Frequent deer and marmot sightings
  • πŸ₯Ύ Easy access to subalpine trails
  • πŸ“Έ Sunrise, sunset, and mountain photography
  • ❄️ Winter snowshoeing and skiing when the road is open

πŸ₯Ύ Trails from the Ridge

  • Hurricane Hill Trail β€” about 3.4 mi / 700 ft round trip, 2–3 hours, 🟑 moderate, with wide open views over the mountains and strait. Route reference: AllTrails β€” Hurricane Hill
  • Short paved meadow loops leave directly from the visitor-center area for an easier option.

πŸ“… Best Time to Visit

β˜€οΈ July–September β€” Full Access

Summer brings the most reliable road access, snow-free meadow trails, and peak wildflowers. This is the best window for hiking Hurricane Hill.

πŸ‚ October & Late Spring β€” Shoulder Season

Weather turns quickly and snow can linger on trails. The road may operate on a reduced schedule.

❄️ Winter β€” Snow Season

Hurricane Ridge is a winter recreation area, but the road opens only on limited days and closes for storms. Traction and chains may be required.

πŸš— Access and Parking

Hurricane Ridge Road climbs from Port Angeles to the visitor area. Parking near the visitor center fills on clear summer days, so arrive early.

⚠️ Hurricane Ridge Road can close temporarily for weather, snow, road work, or parking capacity. Check the official road conditions before driving up.

🎟️ Fees and Reservations

Hurricane Ridge is inside Olympic National Park, so a valid park entrance pass (or Interagency pass) is required. No timed-entry reservation is normally required for the ridge itself, but verify current rules before you go.

⚠️ Alpine Safety

Conditions at elevation change fast. Visitors should:

  • Carry warm layers even in summer
  • Watch for afternoon storms
  • Stay on established trails to protect fragile meadows
  • Keep a safe distance from wildlife
  • Carry water, sun protection, and offline navigation
