🏞️ About Bodega Head

Bodega Head is a rocky peninsula that extends into the Pacific Ocean at the entrance to Bodega Bay.

It forms the southern end of Sonoma Coast State Park and offers wide views of the open ocean, Bodega Bay, sea stacks, coastal cliffs, and the surrounding Sonoma coastline.

Short bluff-top trails make it an easy scenic stop without requiring a long hike.

🌸 March–May — Wildflowers and Whales

Spring is one of the best periods for:

Volunteer whale-watch interpreters are often present on selected weekends from winter through spring.

☀️ June–October — Best Overall Weather

Summer and early fall generally provide the driest weather.

Morning fog and strong wind are common, but afternoons may become clearer. September and October often bring especially pleasant conditions.

🌧️ November–February — Stormy Coast

Winter can offer dramatic waves and whale sightings, but expect:

• Strong winds
• Muddy trails
• Reduced visibility
• Large surf

🚗 Access

Bodega Head is reached by following Westshore Road around the west side of Bodega Bay.

Parking areas are available near the main overlooks and trailheads. There is no long approach hike required.

The short East Trail loop is approximately 1.7 miles and provides views of the open ocean, Bodega Bay, sea stacks, and Doran Spit. See the Sonoma County hiking guide for route details.

⚠️ Coastal Safety

The bluff edges are steep and often unprotected.

Visitors should:

• Stay on established trails
• Keep back from cliff edges
• Watch children closely
• Expect strong wind
• Avoid slippery or eroding slopes
• Never turn their back on the ocean

Swimming along the exposed Sonoma Coast is dangerous because of cold water, rip currents, heavy surf, and sudden drop-offs.

Pet rules vary by trail and nearby protected areas.

Keep dogs leashed, under control, and away from wildlife and cliff edges. Follow all posted restrictions.
